If something doesn’t feel quite right it usually  sends up a little red flag and gives cause to pause. So, is the case with the defeat of Prop 37, Label GMO’s.  Something was not adding up. With 90% of the people polled wanting GMO’s labelled how is it that the initiative lost with only 48.5% of the people voting for it?

A small group, headed by Tom Courbat, former senior budget analyst for LA County, was wondering the same thing and decided to challenge the vote. Any public citizens can ask for a recount but they have to pay for it. Here is how that recount inquiry went down. It explains a lot and tells you that when something just doesn’t feel right chances are that feeling is right.  Forget Denmark, something is very rotten in our own backyard.

Now that I have your attention

This is what we are really talking about.

California Secretary of State’s office announced today, June 13, 2012, that the Right to Know initiative to label genetically engineered foods will be on the state’s November ballot. The historic initiative would be the first law in the United States requiring labeling of a wide range of genetically engineered foods.

“All eyes are on California, and the voters of this state will support our right to know what’s in our food when they vote this November,” said Stacy Malkan from the Right to Know campaign”

Now, here is the rest of the story

California Voters to Decide to Label GMO’s.

First in the country Label GMOs Initiative.

If you would like to volunteer or do something go here. Contact Label GMOs I am volunteering to plaster, plant, lawn signs all over SLO. They provide the signs I just have to stick them in the ground. Jeffery Smith, Seeds of Deception, is making the rounds and looking for venues in any town anywhere in California. Also our fearless leader, Pamm Larry is making herself available to talk to any groups or organizations about getting the vote out in November. If you have a venue Jeff and Pamm will be there. Check it out here:  Contact Label GMOs.

And remember folks, this is not about the pros or cons of GMOs. So when you hear Monsanto talking about how great GMOs are you don’t have to listen or even respond.  Or you could say that’s all well and good but this is not about GMOs this is about my right to know what I am eating. Label it. This is all about OUR RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD.

And labeling GMOs will not cost the taxpayers or the manufacturers one extra red cent.  BEWARE OF SCARE TACTICS and know the truth.  The interesting thing here is twofold. First, major companies like Kellogg, Coke, Pepsi, Kraft, Heinz, Nestle, Best Foods, Pillsbury, Burger King, MacDonalds, Anheuser-Busch Budweiser, Bud Light, Bud Ice (and) Michelob, Campbells, Seagram Spirits, Mars, Cadbury Schweppes, and “Others Add to a Growing List of Companies Going GE-Free in Europe. Why? Because of labeling. If they want to sell in the EU they have to label GMOs. So, we know for a fact that these companies are already labeling GMOs and doing it here is the States is no big deal and the cost of doing business.

And what is even more significant is that it was the manufacturers who immediately went out and lined up non-gmo products to sell so they could label it non-gmo and sell to the EU and 40 other countries with labeling laws. They got rid of GMOs products because no body would buy it. Monsanto is out of business now not the manufactures.

The only one dead set against labeling GMOs is Monsanto. Because Monsanto is the sole supplier of patented GMOs and knows for a fact that given a choice we will choose non-gmo products.  The EU proved that fact. So this is all about denying us our rights. So far it has worked and the EPA and FDA Congress have assisted and cooperated with Monsanto and given them carte blanche over our rights.  This labeling law is the game changer.  We got them all by the balls and dead to Rights on this one.

Manufacturers are already cancelling their contracts with the major GMO provider and lining up non-gmo products.  NO COST TO TAXPAYERS OR CONSUMERS. If you hear industry spokesman say it will cost an extra $500 or $1,000 a year if the labeling law goes into effect you can bloody well laugh in their face and call them a liar because that is a bald faced lie. It never happen anywhere where labeling is the law.

And if you really want to play your Ace in the hole contact SafewayRalphs, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Von’s,  Spencer’s and let them know you want GMOs labeled. You have to contact them and let them know how you feel because apparently the grocers association  is siding with Monsanto and opposing the labeling thing.

Let the grocery stores know that’s dumb because you want products labeled.  Customers are the one and only thing grocery stores are concerned with. They don’t give two hoots or a holler about what Monsanto wants because Monsanto doesn’t buy anything. Monsanto sells.  So who do you think the grocery stores are more interested in keeping happy and satisfied?  You or Monsanto?  What is Monsanto going to say to the grocery stores? “If they don’t oppose this labeling law I won’t sell you anymore GMO products?”  Contact the stores. Let them know. Label it or else.  It’s just that simple folks.  And then Vote.

and Everybody that counts wins big time!!!!!

Just needed alittle over a half a million

Several months ago I unsuspectingly walked into a meeting thinking I was signing up to be one of many volunteers in San Luis Obispo to collect signatures for this petition. As it turned out I was the only volunteer from San Luis and one other person from Morro Bay. I thought this will never do. We are going to make history here.  Started making some calls and found over 175 other people from Santa Maria to Paso Robles who thought the same thing. These super volunteers took on their communities and just his week, the last week of the campaign, we beat all of our other weekly totals and turned in 1,245 signatures.

I think we all discovered a very important fact here.  THE BEST OFFENSE AGAINST A COMPANY THAT HAS MORE MONEY THAN GOD IS AN ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS. You can’t buy volunteers.  WE ARE PRICELESS. VOLUNTEERS RULE!!!!!

We got the job done and this initiative will be on the November Ballot!!!!!! We will be the first State in the United States  to mandate, by order of the people, that GMO’s be labeled.  We made history. But the game is not over yet.  There is more history to be made.

Next step, get the vote out. But first, going to be doing a little celebrating.

JANUARY 16,2012

Looks like more and more people are getting on this LETS KICK SOME GMO BUTT bandwagon.  India has charged Monsanto with biopiracy.

An Indian government agency has agreed to sue the developers of genetically modified (GM) eggplant for violating India’s Biological Diversity Act of 2002.

AND

Court rules organic farmers can sue conventional, GMO farmers whose pesticides ‘trespass’ and contaminate their fields

This involves 270,000 organic farmers in America.  For too long, Monsanto has been getting away with suing farmers whose crops have become contaminated by Monsanto’s patented genetic traits and chemical materials, and winning. Thankfully, the justice system seems to now recognize the severe error in this, and is now beginning to rightfully hold polluters and trespassers responsible. Monsanto, your days are numbered.

California’s Initiative process is making it possible to mandate that all GMO products sold in California  be labeled.  It would be a historic first in the US. The time has come for this to happen.

We get the petitions Feb 10  and will be looking to get 800,000 signatures on the petition which would insure the initiative gets on the November ballot. So if you are in California and you see signature gatherers  please sign it. It is called  California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act .

I have scheduled two workshops to train the signature gatherers. I am telling you this because I would never have imagined myself doing this.  Anyone could organize a signature gathering team. And if you only get signatures from people in your neighborhood, or from your community organization, friends or strangers in front of a TJ’s or Whole Foods, it is all good.

There are no small efforts in this department. Everything and anything you do to get this initiative on the ballot is a BIG FREEKING DEAL. I would encourage everyone to contact labelgmos.org and sign up to gather signatures. Someone will contact you get you trained and put some petitions in your hands and you are off and running. I promise you if you get 1 signature on a petition it will make a difference.
O.k. folks that’s it for now.

Will keep you posted.

Feel the Energy?

2nd UPDATE

Our right to know Label GMO’s

THE CALIFORNIA RIGHT TO KNOW GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD ACT Initiative was filed with the California Secretary of State on November 9, 2011.  This is a big deal folks and 20 years in the making!!!!! We should have the verified, approved petition back and in our hands and ready for the signature gathering the first week in January 2012.

Keeping it Fun — Save our Planet. It’s the only one with Chocolate

In the meantime, have had a workshop training  on how to gather the signatures. Will be holding other workshops for the over 80 volunteer signature gatherers here in SLO County.  I am working with a couple of fantastic Cal Poly groups, Empower Poly and Real Food. The students are such a resource and a delight to work with.

Volunteers are wanting to gather signatures in their neighborhood, community groups, church groups, at farmer markets, from local growers and grocery stores, co-ops and health food stores.

I am working with Transition California with over a 1,000 members on gathering signatures in every transition town in California. This has Transition written all over it. There is a real energy and determination surrounding this campaign and is very exciting.

In the next couple of weeks I will be holding  more workshops. I want to concentrate our efforts and hit SLO county in a tidal wave with a sweep that will last 2 weeks starting on Valentines day and ending on the 29th. It’s a leap year.

If anyone is interested in getting involved do sign up at labelgmos.org. There is something for everyone. And if you have never done anything like this before, this is great way to get involved with something that will make a difference.  This is grass roots stuff and you can do no wrong.

Everyone could get at least one signature and that one could make all the difference.  I encourage you to sign up. It really has a very stimulating effect.  And just for fun ask your local grocery store, health food, co-op if they will be supporting the initiative to Label GMO’s.  That just gets the buzz going. People start talking and asking when they can sign the petition.  It will make our appearance something to look forward to.

O.k. Folks, more info below. Thanks for dropping in for the update.  Jeanne

p.s. I made the tee for about $5. Got a shirt at Michaels for $2.50, downloaded the press-on mirror image from the label gmo site,  printed it out on my printer then bought the iron on sheets, package of 6, for $8.  The printer didn’t pick up good color so I just filed it in with a blue permanent marker. Piece of cake and fun to do.

Reposting an article  from NaturalNews on

BABY THIS IS FOR YOU!!

Monsanto’s Roundup linked to deadly diseases and birth defects, most people have no idea by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer.

Also, I have included at the end of this article the latest action by Label GMO’s.org. to get a California Initiative on the ballot to make labeling of all GMO’s mandatory. All I can say is the time for bitching and moaning about how bad it is, is over. It is time to start turning this thing around.

If you like being in driver’s seat then this is where you need to be.  Take this initiative process and drive it home. They (WE)  need 800,000 signatures. Sound like a lot of work? It is a lot especially if only a handful of people are doing it all. I encourage you for your own peace of mind and satisfaction to get one name on a petition. And encourage that person to get a name and before you know it there are a million and one names. And a million and one more people who can feel better about themselves because they have made a difference. The power of one.  One name at a time is easy and you know and I know you can do that.

p.s. TODAY (AUGUST 20,2011) I ATTENDED A SEED MEETING WITH THE “LABEL GMO” PEOPLE. THEY NEEDED A POINT PERSON TO COLLECT SIGNATURES IN SLO. WELL, ALL FINGERS POINTED AT ME. IT IS TIME TO WALK THE WALK JEANNE GIRL. SO I AM ANNOUNCING I AM THE OFFICIAL CONTACT PERSON IN SLO IF YOU WANT TO SIGN ON TO KICKING SOME GMO BUTT. MY HOPE IS THAT WE CAN PUT SLO ON THE MAP AND GET NATIONAL ATTENTION FOR ALL THINGS GOOD AND GREEN BY COLLECTING THE MOST SIGNATURES.

MY HOPE, ALSO, IS THAT ALL THE TERRIFIC AND CONSCIENTIOUS GROUPS OF DEDICATED PEOPLE WORKING INDEPENDENTLY ON PROJECTS THAT ARE ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES CAN BAN TOGETHER FOR a VERY BRIEF AND SHINNING MOMENT TO COLLECTIVELY AND WITHOUT HESITATION, DELIVER a VERY SWIFT, DECISIVE BLOW TO ONE OF THE LARGEST THREATS TO OUR ENVIRONMENT, MONSANTO, THE GRIM REAPER TO ALL LIVING THINGS.

EVERYBODY, MOMS, DADS, STUDENTS, SENIORS, RICH, POOR, FARMERS, COMPUTER NERDS, SAINTS AND SINNERS HAS A STAKE IN THIS INITIATIVE TO LABEL GMO’S.  WE ALL EAT FOOD. INITIATIVE DETAILS BELOW. jeanne@holeinthefence.net if you want to leave contact info. thank you, thank you, thank you.

(NaturalNews) A recent report put together by various professors, scholars and researchers affiliated with Earth Open Source, a collaboration group devoted to food issues, cites in great deal the multitude of peer-reviewed scientific studies which show that Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide (glyphosate), which is applied to many genetically-modified (GM) crops, is responsible for causing birth defects, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, reproductive and developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, and cancer — and yet government agencies around the world continue to ignore this crucial information, and withhold it from the public, as they push for its approval or expanded use.

One of the main studies highlighted in the report was published in the August 2010 edition of Chemical Research in Toxicology, and it showed that Roundup causes malformations in frog and chicken embryos at levels much lower than those used on agricultural crops. And since Roundup-ready GM crops are designed to tolerate the herbicide, not resist it, they literally absorb Roundup, which is then passed on in much higher levels to humans that eat the tainted crops.

Another study conducted as part of the Argentine government’s research group CONICET found high rates of the same or similar birth defect in humans living near GM soy crops that were routinely sprayed with Roundup, indicating a clear connection between the chemical and human birth defects. More than half of the growing land in Argentina is now dominated by GM soy, which is sprayed with about 53 millions gallons of Roundup every single year.

The authors of the report say that this and the bulk of other independent, indicting evidence against Roundup has been largely ignored by governments, including in the EU where new data requirements will demand that proper investigation into the safety of GMOs is conducted. Rather than rely on industry-funded pseudoscience that claims GMOs are safe, authors say those working for the people must rise to the occasion and take charge in having proper safety evaluations conducted on the safety of Roundup.

“The public … has been kept in the dark by industry and regulators about the ability of glyphosate and Roundup to cause malformations,” write the authors in their summary. “[T]he work of independent scientists who have drawn attention to the herbicide’s teratogenic effects has been ignored, denigrated, or dismissed … They have also contributed to the growing division between independent and industry science, which in turn erodes public trust in the regulatory process.”

http://www.mindfully.org/GE/Farmers-Struggle-Against-GMO.htm

My last 6 blogs were about GMO’s.   It was a very one sided point of view, mine and about 200 million other people who view GMO’s as a man-made scourge upon the earth not unlike the biblical plague of locust described in Exodus.

I didn’t realize until I looked up the biblical reference to locust how similar the plagues of the bible correspond to the our modern day ‘curses.’ The biblical  locust “descended upon the land and ate every living plant and tree.” Humm. Terminator seeds, Frankentrees and Roundup Ready crops created by Monsanto does the same thing. Kills everything it comes in contact with.  Geez who needs gods to cast plagues upon the earth when we have man-made curses like Monsanto to do it for us?  So, where is our modern day Moses to get us out of this mess?  I wish I knew. I am not a particularly religious person but this has me wondering.  All this plague stuff has to do with nature and living organisms.

The plagues as they appear in the Bible are:[4]

  1. (exodus 7:14–25˄) water turned to blood killing all fish and other water life. (Dam)
  2. (exodus 8:1–8:15˄) frogs (Tsifardeah)
  3. (exodus 8:16–19˄) lice or gnats (Kinim)
  4. (exodus 8:20–30˄) beasts or flies[5] (Arov)
  5. (exodus 9:1–7˄) disease on livestock (Dever)  Mad cow?
  6. (exodus 9:8–12˄) unhealable boils (Shkhin)
  7. (exodus 9:13–35˄) hail mixed with fire (Barad)
  8. (exodus 10:1–20˄) locusts (Arbeh)
  9. (exodus 10:21–29˄) darkness (Choshech)
  10. (exodus 11˄,12˄) death of the first-born of all Egyptian families. (Makat b’chorot)

These references are from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagues_of_Egypt

It just seems to me the key here is nature.  If you want to get someone’s attention just threaten and change the natural order of things.  GMO’s have changed the natural order of things.  The Egyptian pharaoh was a pretty hard nut to crack.  He didn’t ‘get it’ until after the all the fishes in the Nile died all the cows, donkeys and horses died and  the scourge of flies, frogs, locust, lice and unhealable boils happened.  Not until the death of his own first born did he finally get it.

Our government is a pretty hard nut to crack too.  They don’t get it. I mean we are the only country that has not labeled these cursed GMO’S.   We have made it a law to Not label GMO’s.  That is just crazy talk.  I mean really. What is it going to take to get things turned around before someone or something ends up dead?  I think having 80% of all our food contaminated with GMO’s is enough of an indicator of where things are going.  Cracking the nut in this case is just not worth the effort.  By all indications the nut is rotten anyway so why even bother trying to crack it?  Our government has had numerous opportunities to do the right thing by at least labeling GMO’s and has ignored every request to do so.  So, I think now it’s  time to ignore the rotten nuts and get on with picking something better.

Better Nuts worth Cracking

Rather than try to take on the rotten State or Federal government I am going to start this nut cracking business in my own backyard.   I can do that by getting an ordinance written here in SLO that requires all GMO’s to be identified on the signage with a red dot at the Point of Purchase.  I have talked about the organization Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund who helps people write ordinances.  I also told you I would keep you posted as to the process.  So far we are off to a bit of a bumpy start.  I have been in contact with Ben Price and Shannon Biggs.  Ben is working out of headquarters in Pennsylvania and Shannon is the Rep for California.

We have made our introductions.   I have made my intentions known and the offer to have a 3 way phone conversation was extended by Ben.  That was 3 weeks ago.  I have since sent a follow-up email last week to Ben and Shannon indicating I am ready to get started.  I am still waiting for a response.   In the mean time I have learned we are a charter city, which is a good thing. Also am lining up local organizations I belong to as well as networking with farm organizations I think would be so inclined to back this ordinance.

Community involvement is key to this effort. The more the merrier. I am approaching this as a one for all all for one flash movement.  If we could All join forces for just one big push or effort our chances of success are greatly increased.

After we  succeed in passing this ordinance as a community we disband and go back to our regularly scheduled events.  We can each be doing our own thing but when the need arises we can ban together as One in a Flash. Get the job done and then go back to what we were doing. One thing that really impressed me about CELDF was how they were able to organize at the local level.  This local level stuff is very powerful.  In fact, in many  cases as they have proven, local laws and ordinances trump State and Federal laws .

Maine Town Passes Ordinance Asserting Local Self-Governance and Stripping Corporate Personhood | Press Release

“We do not recognize corporate personhood.”  That trumps the Supreme Court ruling.  Cities have successfully done this thereby disarming corporate mercenaries and rendering them helpless. Oh Yea that’s the ticket.

There are a lot of issues right now.  Had to pick my battles.  Getting GMO’s labeled is one. Growing timber bamboo in San Luis Obispo on the Dalidio property another and learning to edit iMovie the last one.  I just told you about how I am working on the first one. Timber Bamboo is in the works. Learning to edit is well, it is a learning process.  Want to see what I have learned so far?  It will leave you laughing…..  (so hard for me to post. It is so not perfect.  But if I didn’t get it posted today on the full worm moon it was never going to get done.)
